Symposium on Machine Learning in Quantum Chemistry 2021 (SMLQC-2021) Held in XMU

The international Symposium on Machine Learning in Quantum Chemistry (SMLQC), jointly organized by the State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces (PCOSS), Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (FTCC), and College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Xiamen University was successfully held at the Conference Room 202, Lu Jiaxi Building, Xiamen University, from 12 to 14 November 2021. This conference has provided a safe and high-level international exchange platform and greatly extended the influence of our college in the international community. Associate Professor Pavlo O. Dral was the chairman of the conference.

Zhaoxiong Xie, Dean of the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, attended the opening ceremony and gave a welcoming speech. Subsequently, Associate Professor Pavlo O. Dral introduced the research interests and achievements of our college, especially the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, to the participants.

The conference invited 30 scientists to give high-level academic lectures. The speakers represented 11 countries and many top research institutions, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, The University of Tokyo, Kumamoto University, University of Southern California, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne , ETH Zurich, Uppsala University, Aix-Marseille University, the University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, New York University Shanghai, Southeast University, Academia Sinica, and South China Normal University. They introduced their most recent research work in the fields of electronic structure calculations, dynamics simulations and material design using machine learning in the form of online reports.

SMLQC was held online with on-site broadcasts in Siming and Xiang'an campuses of Xiamen University. More than 150 domestic and overseas participants joined online, while more than 200 participants joined on-site. In addition to lectures, SMLQC hosted 31 online poster presentations. Domestic and overseas scholars participated in lively exchanges and discussions both online and on site. The conference also awarded 6 poster prizes, including one prize based on popular vote, one first prize and one second prize, and three third prizes.

In order to facilitate further exchange in the application of machine learning in the field of quantum chemistry, the organizing committee has decided to hold online workshop every two weeks, and will also establish the International Society for Machine Learning in Quantum Chemistry (ISMLQC). At the end, the organizing committee announced that the second edition of the symposium will be held in 2023 at Uppsala University in Sweden and hosted by Prof. Roland Lindh.
